College in Greater Noida: 35 kW (2019)

Verde Solaire installed a 35 kW rooftop solar system at a college in Greater Noida in 2019. The college reports that the system is working very well and has delivered substantial savings on its electricity bill.

Why a college roof suits solar

A college draws most of its electricity in daylight: classrooms, laboratories, fans, lights and computer rooms run between morning and late afternoon, which is when the panels generate. A home, by contrast, uses much of its power in the evening and depends on net metering to bank the daytime surplus. An institution therefore uses a larger share of its own generation directly, and its case rests on payback rather than on subsidy.

The PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana subsidy does not apply. Its eligibility is an Indian citizen who owns a house with a suitable roof, has a valid electricity connection and has not taken an earlier solar subsidy, which rules out an institution. A college in Greater Noida instead compares the units it would stop buying against the price of the plant; the commercial payback model does that arithmetic for any capacity and tariff.

Net metering in Greater Noida

Greater Noida and Greater Noida West are served by NPCL (Noida Power Company Limited). Noida city is served by a different licensee, PVVNL, and the two have different portals, so the name on the bill decides which process applies.
